Membrane basics

Tubular membranes

Construction and use.

Tubular membrane module.

How a tubular membrane is built

The membrane is formed into tubes. The liquid flows through the tubes at high speed to keep turbulence high. The tubes are potted in an epoxy end cap at both ends, and the whole bundle sits in a plastic or fibreglass module. Permeate collects in the module and is drained off. Concentrate leaves at the end of the module, still at high speed.

When to choose tubular

Choose tubular when the liquid contains particles, especially coarse ones, that would block the front of a spiral wound element straight away. That means heavy applications such as digesters and membrane bioreactors (MBR), and streams with coarse solids and heavy fouling.

PVDF or PES

Different membranes have a different cut-off profile, and different formulations give a different profile again. PVDF can take heavier cleaning.

All our tubular membranes are industrial grade.
