Replacing an 8038: what to check
8038 elements from different makers share the same outer envelope within a few millimetres. A one-to-one swap still needs five checks:
- Outer wrap: net, cage or hard shell. The wrap sets the bypass around the element and the fit in the vessel.
- Feed spacer: 30 to 31 mil for clear feeds, 46 to 65 mil for viscous concentrates. A thicker spacer means less membrane area: one sanitary RO 8038 element drops from 36 to 21 m² going from 30 to 65 mil.
- Membrane and cut-off: RO, NF (100 to 600 Da), UF (10,000 to 20,000 Da) or MF (0.1 µm) must match your separation.
- Limits: pressure, temperature and the cleaning pH at your CIP temperature. Several data sheets narrow the pH range as the temperature rises.
- Food contact: FDA 21 CFR, EC 1935/2004 and EU 10/2011 on the data sheet; 3-A 45-03 where your plant requires it.
8038 or 8040?
Same diameter, 51 mm difference in length. 8040 is the standard industrial size with fixed ATDs; 8038 is the standard sanitary size without. They need different pressure vessels.
Questions
What size is an 8038 membrane?
965 mm (38 inch) long and about 201 mm (7.9 inch) in diameter. The permeate tube has an inner diameter of 28.6 to 28.9 mm.
Why is 8038 used in food and dairy?
8038 is the standard sanitary size: elements without ATDs, with a net, cage or hard-shell wrap, so product and cleaning solution can flow around and clean the outside of the element.
How much membrane area does an 8038 element have?
Between 20.4 and 36 m² in the data sheets we use. A 30 mil spacer gives the most area; 46 to 65 mil spacers give less area but handle viscous concentrates better.
Can I replace an 8038 with an 8040?
Not one to one: an 8040 is 51 mm longer and normally has ATDs, so it needs a different pressure vessel.
What do you need for a quote?
