Replacing an 8040: what to check
8040 elements from different makers share the same outer envelope within a few millimetres. A one-to-one swap still needs five checks:
- Permeate tube. Most 8040 elements have a 28.6 mm (1.125") inner diameter; some have 38.1 mm (1.50"). The interconnectors must match.
- Male or female permeate tube, and the position of the brine seal.
- Membrane chemistry and limits: pressure, temperature, pH and chlorine must fit your process and cleaning (CIP) regime.
- Feed spacer: a different spacer changes the pressure drop and the cleanability.
- Design: sanitary or industrial. A food process needs an element with food-contact compliance on its data sheet.
Sanitary 8040: the exception
The normal sanitary size is 8038, without ATDs. Sanitary 8040 elements exist for specific duties, such as hot-water sanitisation, in cage-wrap or hard-shell designs or with ATDs.

What size is an 8040 membrane?

Are 8040 elements from different brands interchangeable?
Usually in size, but check the permeate tube diameter (28.6 or 38.1 mm), male or female connection, brine seal position, spacer and the membrane limits before swapping.
How much membrane area does an 8040 element have?
Between 20.9 and 40.9 m² in the data sheets we use. A thicker feed spacer leaves room for less membrane.
Is there a sanitary 8040?
Yes, as an exception, for example for hot-water sanitisation. The normal sanitary size is 8038.
